A mother of three, Shipli Begum, 48, tragically passed away in the hospital after escaping from her burning home, crying out for assistance in front of stunned neighbors. This incident occurred around lunchtime on August 28, when Ms. Begum rushed onto the street pleading for help.
Imran Syed, 46, a nearby resident, was about to have lunch when he heard her desperate calls. He immediately went outside, only to find that Ms. Begum had returned inside and was on the floor as her husband, Mohammed Ahad, attempted to cool her burns with water.
Ms. Begum ultimately succumbed to her injuries after emergency services arrived at her home. Mr. Syed recounted seeing smoke and entering the house, where he discovered Ms. Begum unresponsive and severely burned. He quickly took their children outside just as firefighters arrived within a minute.
Another neighbor, Mohammed Ali, recalled hearing Ms. Begum’s cries and witnessing Mr. Ahad frantically calling for his wife while trying to shield her with a fire blanket. He estimated that she was outside for approximately 20 seconds in an effort to prevent the flames from spreading to the entire terraced home.
Mr. Ali noted that after being covered with the blanket, Ms. Begum managed to walk back inside with her husband. He described the scene as deeply distressing, stating, “Her clothes got burned off… it was very traumatizing.”
Residents mentioned that the family had moved to London from Walsall, near Birmingham, just three months prior to the incident. Maureen French, 83, expressed her disbelief at the tragedy, describing Ms. Begum as “a very nice lady.”
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that Ms. Begum was taken to the hospital, where she sadly passed away later that same day. The family is receiving support from specially trained officers.
The investigation is being conducted by the North East Command Unit, with initial assistance from Specialist Crime. A 55-year-old man, known to the victim, was arrested at the scene in connection with her death and is currently on police bail as inquiries continue. No additional suspects are being pursued, and the Coroner has been notified.
An inquest into Ms. Begum’s death is scheduled to open at East London Coroner’s Court on Thursday, September 12.
