Kenneth Armitage, an 81-year-old grandfather described as exceptionally kind, tragically passed away after falling through an unguarded hole in his bathroom floor. The incident occurred while renovations were underway to convert his bathroom into a wet room.
Workers had removed the floorboards for plumbing access, leaving a hazardous opening. Mr. Armitage fell through this gap and landed on the kitchen floor below. His son-in-law discovered his body the following evening.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating the incident involving Cooper and Westgate, the construction firm responsible for the work at Mr. Armitage’s home on Whitestone Drive. Their inquiry revealed that the company failed to secure the hole adequately, as their employees lacked proper training and a thorough risk assessment was not conducted.
Kenneth’s daughter, Suzy, expressed her grief, stating, “Our dad was everything to us. He was the kindest person you could ever meet and a wonderful grandfather.” She added that the family is struggling to accept the loss, which she feels should never have happened.
Cooper and Westgate Co. Ltd was found guilty of breaching health and safety regulations and was fined £150,000, along with £50,000 in costs at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on September 17, 2024. HSE inspector Yolande Burns-Sleightholme emphasized the importance of properly assessing and securing risks associated with construction work, noting that this tragic incident could have been prevented with appropriate training and safety measures.
