Pastor Paul David Krampitz, 65, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Route 9 in Berlin on Wednesday afternoon. According to state police, he was riding his Harley-Davidson in the left lane of Route 9 North when a Chevrolet Impala collided with him around 4:14 p.m. near exit 33, resulting in him being thrown from his motorcycle.

Krampitz was rushed to New Britain Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. He was a revered pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church and served as a chaplain for the Connecticut State Police as well as various local departments.

In a heartfelt statement, the Connecticut State Police expressed deep sorrow over Krampitz’s passing, highlighting his 16 years of service, during which he provided crucial support during some of the department’s most challenging moments, including the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

Appointed as a CT State Police Chaplain on July 3, 2008, by Commissioner John A. Danaher III, Krampitz had assignments with Troop L in Litchfield, Troop H in Hartford, and DESPP Headquarters in Middletown. Additionally, Krampitz briefly served with the Cheshire Police Department, where he was remembered for his contributions as both a dispatcher and an officer.

A graduate of Yale Divinity School and Hartford Seminary, where he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree, Krampitz had a rich history in ministry, previously serving congregations in Connecticut and Rhode Island. He was also engaged in various leadership roles within church conferences.

Survived by his wife Paula and their five children, Krampitz’s impact on the community and law enforcement was profound. Fellow chaplain Jeffery Gallagher reflected on Krampitz’s mentorship, emphasizing his remarkable ability to connect with others.
