A 95-year-old veteran lost his life in a tragic car accident while heading to meet friends for an early morning coffee. Peter Pulkkinen, a resident of South Carolina, was involved in a collision with a vehicle from the Myrtle Beach Fire Department on Saturday. His death was confirmed by the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
The incident occurred around 5:46 a.m. Fire department officials later reported on social media that they were responding to a structure fire at the time of the crash. Although MBFD personnel attempted to assist Pulkkinen, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries after arriving at a nearby hospital.
The fire department confirmed that the two firefighters involved were not injured. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Pulkkinen’s niece, Avis, shared with WMBF that her uncle was en route to McDonald’s, where he often met friends. “He was a skilled driver; he always insisted on driving when we visited,” she noted. “He was extremely careful and always checked both ways.”
Peter Pulkkinen, who served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years starting in 1948, was remembered in his obituary as a “quiet man of integrity.” Born in 1929 in Maine, he later met his wife in England and brought her to the U.S.
He was fond of taking walks, reading biographies and history, traveling to see friends in Florida, and enjoyed drives through Kentucky. His obituary highlighted that his favorite weekly outing was dining at the Golden Corral.
