Fatal Greenville shooting death of Keshawn Barrett – Obituary.
A former student of J.H. Rose High School, Keshawn Barrett, was shot and killed today in a shooting that occurred near the school. Another teenager has been charged in connection with his death.
The incident took place around 11:50 a.m. on Glen Dale Drive. Chief Ted Sauls reported that officers discovered the 17-year-old Barrett with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to ECU Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have arrested a 16-year-old suspect, who was acquainted with Barrett but is not from the Greenville area. Preliminary reports suggest that the shooting followed an argument between the two. Due to the suspect’s age, his name is not being released.
In response to the shooting, two local schools were placed on lockdown. Chief Sauls explained, “Our SROs at Rose and South Greenville initiated a modified lockdown due to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.” The lockdown was adjusted as officers continued their search for the suspect.
Pitt County Schools confirmed that Barrett was a ninth-grade student at J.H. Rose and was currently attending Pitt Academy, the county’s alternative school.
The suspect was apprehended on Deck Street, across the railroad tracks from the high school, thanks to a K9 unit from the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office.
Both schools have since lifted their lockdowns. There have been several other shootings near the high school in recent years, raising concerns about safety in the area.
