A construction worker has lost his life and another has sustained injuries after being struck on Interstate 55 during a police pursuit in West Memphis on Wednesday night. Authorities from the Arkansas State Police report that a suspect driving a maroon Corvette collided with the construction crew working on the I-55 bridge during a high-speed chase extending from West Memphis into Memphis.
Justin Delgado, 36, from Lola, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Crittenden County coroner. Another worker was rushed to a hospital in Memphis and is currently in critical condition.
The Corvette was later discovered by Memphis Police in the 200 block of West McKellar Avenue, completely engulfed in flames. The driver remains at large, as stated by Arkansas State Police.
The pursuit initiated around 10 p.m. Wednesday when West Memphis Police attempted to pull over the Corvette for a traffic infraction on East Broadway. The suspect accelerated onto I-55, striking the workers near Mile Marker 3, as per the report from ASP.
Arkansas state troopers were not part of the chase, and the agency is conducting an investigation into the incident.
The workers were employed by the Louis Company based in Grain Valley, Missouri. A representative for the company has not yet issued a statement.
“Our thoughts are with the families, coworkers, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking event,” said a City of West Memphis spokesperson via email. Further details could not be provided due to the ongoing investigation.
