A man was killed and a woman sustained injuries when a shooter opened fire inside a mall in Ocala, Florida, on Saturday, according to police reports. Officers who arrived at Paddock Mall discovered Barron, 40, dead in a communal area.
Authorities suspect that the shooter specifically targeted Barron. The injured woman was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound to her leg, which is not life-threatening, and she is expected to recover fully.
“It’s the worst. The worst thing we can imagine right now at this time of the year. … Somebody has suffered a loss in their family,” remarked Police Chief Michael Balken during a news conference. “It’s a horrible time of year for this to happen ever, but it is especially sad during the holidays.”
Police reported that they found a weapon believed to belong to the shooter but did not disclose specifics about the firearm. The assailant is thought to have fled the scene without being detected and remains at large. Witnesses described him as wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and a mask covering part of his face.
On Sunday, the Ocala police announced they had secured a search warrant for Albert J. Shell Jr., 39, who is wanted on charges of premeditated first-degree murder and attempted premeditated first-degree murder. A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to Shell’s capture.
Additionally, some other injuries were reported, including one person with a broken arm and others experiencing chest pain. The police department received reports of an active shooter situation with multiple gunshots fired at approximately 3:40 p.m., prompting a significant police response to neutralize the threat.
