The triple homicide was uncovered early on Sunday when law enforcement responded to a report about a “suspicious person,” which led them to the family’s home.
Inside, authorities found the lifeless bodies of three victims: Brian Crossman Sr., aged 46, a local government official; his 41-year-old wife, Erica Crossman; and her 13-year-old son, Colin Taft. The victims were reportedly killed early Sunday morning.
Brian Crossman Jr., aged 22 and from Granville, New York, has been charged with three counts of aggravated murder in connection with the deaths. Vermont State Police stated that significant evidence linked him to the crime, including digital records, witness statements, and various interviews.
Details regarding a potential motive for the killings have not been disclosed. Crossman Jr. was apprehended by New York State Police and was brought before a court in Lake George, New York, facing charges related to his status as a fugitive. This charge arises from an arrest warrant issued by Vermont authorities.
He is currently being held without bail, awaiting a hearing in New York next week, with plans for extradition to Vermont still pending.
The Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled all three deaths as homicides, confirming that Crossman Sr. sustained gunshot wounds to his head and torso, while Erica Crossman was shot in the head, and Colin had multiple gunshot injuries.
Brian Crossman Sr. recently joined the Pawlet Select Board, serving as a liaison for community development and the highway department. The Select Board Chair, Mike Beecher, expressed deep sorrow for the loss, highlighting the impact of this tragedy on both the family and the wider community. He emphasized the town’s commitment to supporting one another during this difficult time.
Pawlet, a small town with a population of around 1,400, is situated in western Vermont near the New York border.
