Anitra Holloman, 21, was among four people killed and 17 others injured when gunfire erupted late Saturday evening in the busy Five Points South entertainment district of Birmingham, Alabama. Police believe the attack was a targeted hit, with the other victims caught in the crossfire.
According to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond, multiple suspects arrived around 11 p.m., exited their vehicle, opened fire, and then fled the scene. Authorities suspect that the assailants were specifically targeting one individual, and others were tragically struck in the chaos.
“Someone paid to have that person killed,” Chief Thurmond stated, as detectives continue investigating to identify the intended target of the shooting.
With no arrests made, Birmingham police are working alongside the FBI and other agencies, urging the public to provide any information. The attackers allegedly used machine gun conversion devices, which can transform a firearm into a fully automatic weapon in under a minute. These devices are illegal under federal law, even without a gun attached.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin described gun violence in the city as an “epidemic” and expressed a need for cooperation with state officials to address the issue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two men and a woman, including Anitra Holloman, deceased on the ground. A fourth male victim later died at the University of Alabama Hospital.
Three of the deceased have been identified: Anitra Holloman, 21; Tahj Booker, 27; and Carlos McCain, 27. Authorities are still working to confirm the identity of the fourth victim.
The shooting is one of 404 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Birmingham has experienced a surge in violence despite national trends showing a decline in crime rates. The city’s police have reported a 41.7% increase in murders in early 2024 compared to the previous year.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and horrifying, with bodies on the sidewalks, gun smoke filling the air, and people scrambling for safety. Gabriel Eslami, a 24-year-old who was wounded in the attack, said it felt like a “horror movie” and expressed disbelief at the violence that occurred.
Authorities are committed to apprehending those responsible, with police requesting surveillance footage from nearby businesses to aid in their investigation. The city’s officials are calling for stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing the urgent need to address the gun violence crisis affecting the community.
