A tragic incident in Seaside has claimed the lives of two individuals, including a 19-year-old from Watsonville and a homeless man. The accident occurred near a Sherwin-Williams store on Sunday night, leaving local residents in shock.
“It’s devastating; it’s a shame that both of them lost their lives,” said Seaside resident Ryan Eller.
The Monterey County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Leon Torres and the homeless victim as 40-year-old Daniel Andrew Carrico-Lynn. According to police reports, Torres struck a traffic island at the intersection of Del Monte and Fremont Boulevards, resulting in the vehicle overturning.
Authorities believe this accident could have been avoided. “Safe driving, avoiding alcohol, and adhering to speed limits could have prevented this tragedy,” stated Patrol Sergeant Eddie Enriquez from the Seaside Police Department.
Reports indicate that three other passengers were in Torres’s car at the time of the crash. They told investigators that the group had been drinking at the beach prior to the incident, and authorities are currently assessing whether these passengers will face any legal consequences. “It doesn’t seem likely at this time, but our investigation is still ongoing, and there are further details to examine,” Enriquez noted.
Seaside Police confirmed that the two fatalities from the late-night crash included Carrico-Lynn, a pedestrian, and the driver, Torres. The investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour when it hit the island, subsequently ejected Torres from the car as it continued onto Fremont Boulevard and crashed through a raised barrier before overturning.
Additionally, it was discovered that Torres had a suspended driver’s license and was on probation for DUI offenses at the time of the crash.
