An investigation is ongoing following a tragic mid-air collision involving two aircraft near Lancaster, resulting in the death of one pilot. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced on Monday that determining the cause of the crash could take over a year.
The accident, which occurred around 1 p.m. on Sunday, involved a Yakovlev Yak 52 and a Nanchang CJ-6A that were both on a joint cross-country journey. One plane crashed at the intersection of 47th Street and Avenue F, while the other came down at Avenue G and 60th Street.
The pilot of the Nanchang CJ-6A, 62-year-old Ryder Adams, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, the pilot of the Yakovlev managed to land safely and suffered no injuries. At the time of the incident, only the two pilots were aboard their respective aircraft.
Local resident Bruce Hamburg expressed his sorrow, saying, “Any time anyone loses their life it’s sad. They were out there for a Sunday flight and that happened.”
The specific cause of the collision remains unknown, but the NTSB has retrieved a flight data recorder from the Nanchang, which will be sent to their headquarters for detailed analysis. Investigators plan to continue examining the Yakovlev before both planes are transported to a different facility for additional scrutiny.
The NTSB’s investigation will encompass the pilots, the aircraft involved, and the surrounding operational environment. The entire process could take between one to two years to complete.
