Fatal Melbourne shooting death of Devon L. Lakes – Obituary.
The Melbourne Police Department has identified the victim of a tragic shooting that occurred Saturday evening on Monroe Street as 31-year-old Devon L. Lakes from Palm Bay. The police are currently investigating two unrelated shooting incidents that took place the same evening, resulting in one fatality and two injuries.
In the first incident, reported at 3:25 p.m. in the 900 block of Camphor Way, officers arrived to find an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Witnesses reported that an unidentified male exited a light-colored vehicle and opened fire at Lakes and another individual in a driveway before fleeing the scene. The identity of the injured victim has not been disclosed.
Later that evening, at 7:24 p.m., while officers were still present on Camphor Way, gunfire erupted at the entrance of Eddie Lee Taylor Park, located at 3316 Monroe Street. The park was bustling with attendees watching youth football games, but a large gathering was also present following the funeral of Craig Dewberry, who had been fatally shot on September 10, 2024, at a nearby market.
As shots rang out, the crowd scattered in panic. Two adult males were found to have sustained gunshot wounds; one was taken to the hospital by private vehicle and is in critical condition. Devon L. Lakes was located in the parking lot and transported by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
