Fatal Birmingham shooting death of Anitra Hollman – Obituary.

Birmingham police have confirmed the identities of the four individuals who lost their lives in a mass shooting that occurred Saturday night. The authorities are actively searching for suspects and have announced rewards totaling up to $100,000 for information leading to an arrest.

The tragic incident unfolded in the Five Points South Entertainment District on Magnolia Avenue South around 11 p.m. on Saturday. As of Monday morning, no suspects had been apprehended.

The FBI is offering a reward of $50,000 for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of those involved, while CrimeStoppers is providing an additional $50,000. Individuals with information are encouraged to contact the Secret Witness line at 205-254-7777, 1-800-CALL-FBI, or submit tips through tips.fbi.gov, with assurances of anonymity and witness protection.

The victims included Anitra Hollman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, Carlos McCain, 27, and Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26, according to USA Today. Some other individuals suffered both life-threatening and non-life-threatening injuries. By Monday morning, Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond reported that 12 victims had been discharged from the hospital while five remained under care.

Hollman, Booker, and McCain were discovered unresponsive on the sidewalk by the first responders and were declared dead at the scene, while Patterson was pronounced dead at the University of Alabama Hospital.

Witnesses described a large crowd awaiting entry to a local business when gunfire erupted.

Police Chief Thurmond characterized the shooting as “a hit,” suggesting that a specific individual was targeted, resulting in numerous bystanders being caught in the gunfire. Several shooters reportedly opened fire from a vehicle before exiting and continuing to shoot. Authorities recovered over 100 shell casings at the scene.

The chief indicated that the intended target may be among the deceased.

Thurmond reassured the public, stating there is no need for alarm regarding “people riding around the city of Birmingham shooting people just to be shooting,” as this incident appeared to be targeted. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the potential for “collateral damage.”

In the aftermath, police discovered that some firearms used in the shooting were likely illegally modified to function automatically, according to Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. Such modifications, known as “switches,” can convert semi-automatic handguns to fire multiple rounds as long as the trigger is depressed. These devices are illegal under federal law and can be acquired on the dark web or produced using 3-D printers.

As of Monday, U.S. Representative Terri Sewell was the only congressional representative from Alabama to issue a statement regarding the shooting.

When asked if Governor Kay Ivey would provide a statement about the incident, her communications director, Gina Maiola, noted that the governor’s priority is to ensure accountability for those responsible. Maiola added that Ivey is committed to working with Birmingham to address ongoing crime issues, citing successful efforts in Montgomery through the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit, which has removed numerous firearms equipped with machine gun conversion devices from the streets.
