A tragic incident occurred on Sunday involving two vintage airplanes in California, resulting in the death of experienced pilot Ryder Adams, aged 62. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the collision, which took place over Lancaster.
Adams, a member of the precision-flying Tiger Squadron, was operating a CJ-6A vintage Chinese aircraft when it collided with a Soviet-era plane. The pilot of the second aircraft, who has not been named, fortunately escaped serious harm and managed to perform an emergency landing nearby, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The Red Star Pilots Association expressed their sorrow on Facebook, stating, “It is truly a tragic day for the RPA family.” They confirmed Adams’ death, mentioning that he was returning from a training event in Northern California when the incident occurred. They requested thoughts and prayers for Adams’ wife, Chris, during this difficult time.
The midair crash happened around 12:50 p.m., with wreckage found near 47th Street East and 60th Street East in the suburb. Adams had earned his pilot’s license in January 2012 and subsequently acquired high-performance and multi-engine ratings shortly thereafter.
The NTSB is actively looking into the circumstances surrounding this tragic collision, which claimed the life of Adams and left the other pilot shaken but unharmed.
