On Saturday, September 21, a shooting incident in the Township of Langley claimed the life of 38-year-old Johnathan Hebrada-Walters, a resident of Edmonton, Alberta. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed his identity on Monday, noting that he was known to law enforcement. Initial reports suggest that this incident was a targeted shooting connected to the ongoing gang conflict in British Columbia.
Around 6 p.m. on September 21, officers from the Langley RCMP responded to reports of gunfire in the vicinity of 196 Street and 84 Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds; one of them, Hebrada-Walters, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was located at 208 Street and 78 Avenue, where he was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Some reports indicated that the vehicle carrying the victims had been shot at in the 19600-block of 84th Avenue, with a body later found covered by a tarp at that location. The second victim managed to drive to a nearby area before being taken to the hospital.
IHIT reported that forensic examinations have been completed at both shooting sites, and investigators are actively seeking out CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. The second victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, is also known to police. However, earlier reports identified him as Barinder Dhaliwal, who has a history of gang associations and prior shooting incidents.
The ongoing investigation has led IHIT to collaborate with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC and law enforcement agencies in Alberta to explore the connections between the victims.
