Friends and teachers at Catalina High School are honoring Minhaj Jamshidi, an Afghan refugee who was shot and killed on the University of Arizona campus late on Sunday, September 22. Faculty members described him as driven and hardworking, leaving a lasting impression on those around him.
Abigail Beck, a close friend and former wrestling teammate of Jamshidi, recalled their last encounter when he visited the school to practice wrestling with his younger brother. “This kid was like a brother to me,” Beck shared. “He brought light into every space he entered.”
Beck is committed to preserving Jamshidi’s memory and aims to instill his “never give up” attitude within the Catalina High wrestling team. “After speaking with his family, I promised them that as long as I’m coaching here, Minhaj will never just be a memory. He meant so much more than that.”
Jamshidi and his family fled Afghanistan in 2021 following the U.S. withdrawal. Aidan Lewis, who assisted the family in adapting to life in Tucson, described Jamshidi as eager to learn, quickly picking up English and making friends effortlessly. “He was sociable and had a warm spirit,” Lewis remarked.
Tim Bridges, the Athletic Director at Catalina, fondly remembered Jamshidi’s dedication and focus, traits that contributed to his success. Exclusive footage from the scene shows the altercation that led to Jamshidi’s tragic death. The suspected shooter, Ryan Romero-Encinas, is seen engaged in a fight with Jamshidi outside the Arizona-Sonoran dorms.
Authorities urge anyone with information regarding Jamshidi’s death or Romero-Encinas’s whereabouts to contact 911 or 88-CRIME.
