Fatal Mecosta County drowning death of Gavin Miller – Obituary.
Authorities have confirmed the identity of a 21-year-old who tragically drowned after falling from a fishing boat in Lower Evans Lake. Gavin Miller’s body was recovered just before noon on September 24, 2024, by a dive team from the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office.
Miller, who lived in the City of Rodney, was out fishing with another man, 24, from the same area when their small boat capsized around 10 p.m. on Monday night. The older companion managed to swim to shore and called for help from a nearby resident.
Despite the efforts of first responders, the search for Miller was hampered by poor visibility, leading to a temporary halt around 1 a.m. The operation resumed at 7:30 a.m. with the assistance of multiple agencies. Boats equipped with sonar and other technology conducted thorough searches of the area, while firefighters from Big Rapids Township utilized a drone for visual and thermal scans.
The dive team eventually located Miller’s body alongside debris from the capsized boat. Authorities noted that he was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the incident.
