The coroner from Anderson County, South Carolina, has identified a 17-year-old high school student and mother who tragically lost her life in a crash that also injured her boyfriend. Abbigail Callaham, a student at Belton-Honea Path High School, was a passenger in a Chevrolet S-10 truck involved in the incident.
According to Coroner Greg Shore, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Thomas Kennedy, also a BHP student. Shore expressed sorrow over the situation, describing it as a tragic event.
The accident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Clamp Drive at Ernest Lane in Belton, as reported by a witness who was following the truck. This witness, also a student at BHP High School, noted that the group had just left school due to an early dismissal.
Shore explained that as the truck navigated a curve, a large bird, possibly a turkey, struck the windshield, causing Kennedy to lose control of the vehicle. The truck veered off the road, overcorrected, and ultimately collided with a tree. Unfortunately, Callaham was not wearing a seatbelt and was trapped in the wreckage, where she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Kennedy was transported by ambulance to AnMed Health in critical condition, but he was responsive when emergency medical personnel arrived. He is currently on the path to recovery.
The coroner determined that Callaham’s cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries and classified the incident as accidental. Both Callaham and Kennedy were parents to a four-month-old child.
Heartbroken by the news, Shore emphasized the community’s sorrow over the circumstances. The Anderson County School District Two released a statement expressing their sadness over the loss of 11th grader Abbigail “Grace” Callaham. They announced plans to provide additional counseling services at BHP for students and staff during this challenging time and requested that the community keep both Callaham’s and Kennedy’s families in their thoughts and prayers.
The district also mentioned a scheduled event called “See You at the Pole,” set for Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m., where attendees would offer prayers for the two students and their families.
