Fatal Minneapolis shooting death of Eddie Freeman III – Obituary.
Authorities have identified the individual involved in a shooting incident with a Minnesota State Patrol trooper on Interstate 94 over the weekend. Eddie Freeman III, 23, from Minneapolis, faces six felony charges related to the event that transpired on the freeway near Dowling Avenue North and West Broadway on Saturday night.
According to a preliminary report from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Freeman allegedly opened fire as Trooper Mark Vande Steeg arrived at the scene following Freeman’s crash. In response, Vande Steeg returned fire. As a one-year veteran of the state patrol, he is currently on standard critical incident leave.
The criminal complaint reveals that troopers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on I-94 close to Dowling Avenue North shortly after 10 p.m. While en route, they were informed that shots had been fired. Upon arriving, Vande Steeg came under immediate gunfire from Freeman, who fired several rounds at his patrol car.
Fortunately, Vande Steeg was not injured, though a bullet hole was found in his vehicle. There were no injuries reported from the shooting, and Freeman was apprehended shortly thereafter. During the arrest, he allegedly spat on a Minneapolis police officer who was providing assistance.
Freeman’s girlfriend was located in the crashed vehicle and informed authorities that she had ended their relationship while they were driving on I-94.
