New York State Police have confirmed the identity of the Hudson Valley high school student who lost his life in a recent accident and have charged the driver involved. The incident took place in Sullivan County at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 22, along Route 17 West in Mamakating.
Trooper Steven Nevel reported that an initial investigation indicated a 2014 white Honda CRV left the roadway, plunging down a steep ravine before overturning. Emergency responders removed all four individuals from the vehicle. Two were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla in critical condition, while one passenger was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Wallkill before being transferred to Westchester Medical Center.
Seventeen-year-old Jack P. Braun was among the passengers and succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Garnet Health Medical Center, as stated by Nevel. The driver, a 17-year-old, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and faces charges that include vehicular manslaughter, two counts of vehicular assault, and driving while intoxicated. The name of the driver has not been disclosed due to his age.
Assistance at the scene came from the Bloomingburg Fire Department, Mobile Medic, Hatzolah EMS, Rock Hill EMS, Atlantic Air One, and Hackensack Air One. All four individuals in the Honda CRV were students from Minisink Valley High School, prompting the school district to offer counseling services for students and staff in light of the tragedy.
The investigation is still ongoing, and State Police urge anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the vehicle prior to the incident to reach out to the New York State Police at Middletown at 845-344-5300.
