Authorities have identified the individual who lost his life following an avalanche on the Arrowsmith Range on Wednesday. The victim, 38-year-old Brett Evans from Staveley in the Ashburton District, was recovered from the scene.
Law enforcement expressed their condolences to Evans’ family and friends during this difficult time. Investigations are ongoing in collaboration with the Coroner, and WorkSafe has been informed about the incident.
Police received a report of the avalanche at approximately 12:25 PM on Wednesday, noting that a person had become trapped and was in critical condition when they were rescued around 1 PM.
“Sadly, he passed away shortly thereafter. Fortunately, there are no other missing persons connected to the avalanche,” police stated previously.
