In a tragic incident on Thursday morning, St. Paul police officers fatally shot Seantrell Murdock, a 29-year-old man suspected of involvement in a recent homicide in St. Paul. The police chief, Axel Henry, described the prior killing as one of the most “cold-blooded” acts he had witnessed in his nearly three-decade career.
Authorities tracked Murdock to Belle Plaine after identifying a suspect vehicle and obtaining a photo of the driver. When police approached the residence around 6:30 a.m., Murdock emerged holding a handgun, prompting two officers to fire upon him. He was subsequently transported to Hennepin Healthcare, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Murdock’s family has confirmed he left behind four children and was en route to work at the time of the incident. They are seeking answers regarding the shooting while expressing their intent to await the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an inquiry into the police shooting, with the involved officers currently on administrative leave. According to police, all officers had their body cameras activated during the incident. The previous homicide, which Murdock is suspected of committing, was captured on surveillance footage from a nearby location, and police do not believe any additional suspects are involved at this time.
An area surrounding Meridian and Prairie streets in Belle Plaine was cordoned off during the investigation, prompting police to advise the public to steer clear, although they confirmed there was no active threat.
Local residents expressed their relief at the police presence during the event, with one neighbor stating she was glad the situation was managed effectively. Belle Plaine is situated approximately 44 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
