Anthony Rivera, a 48-year-old Los Angeles resident, was killed earlier this week during a Metro bus hijacking, police confirmed on Friday. The incident occurred when 51-year-old suspect, Lamont Campbell, took control of the bus and held the driver at gunpoint, leading to a pursuit that ended in downtown Los Angeles. Rivera was found with multiple gunshot wounds and later died at the hospital.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s South Bureau Homicide Division identified Rivera on Wednesday after the incident. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and no motive for the hijacking has been released. Campbell is currently being held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility on a $2 million bail, according to inmate records.
The hijacking began around 12:45 a.m. near Figueroa Street and Manchester Avenue in South Los Angeles when Campbell allegedly boarded the bus and argued with the driver. Police said the driver triggered an alert, prompting a slow pursuit that lasted for nearly an hour, eventually ending at Sixth and Alameda streets in downtown LA. Campbell barricaded himself inside the bus before SWAT officers intervened, using non-lethal tactics to apprehend him.
Rivera, a passenger on the bus, had already been shot and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. This tragic incident adds to a growing number of violent crimes on LA Metro transit this year, with four other people having been killed on buses or trains in 2024. The surge in crime has led Metro to enhance security measures, including increased law enforcement presence and exploring new technologies like weapons-detection systems.
