Recent reports have revealed the identities of some victims of Hurricane Helene, which struck Florida as a Category 4 storm on September 26. Among the deceased is Vernon “Leon” Davis, an assistant chief with the Blackshear Fire Department, who was responding to emergency calls and assisting with fallen trees and power lines when a tree crashed onto his truck at approximately 1:30 a.m. on September 27, as reported by various news outlets.
Blackshear Police Chief Christopher Wright spoke highly of Davis, stating he was “one of the greatest folks that Blackshear had” and added that “We’re all better for having known him. He would do anything for anybody.”
Another victim identified is Luna Jade Gaddis, a 4-year-old girl who lost her life in North Carolina after her family’s vehicle was involved in a collision around 8:10 a.m. during heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Helene, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. A 2-year-old and a 12-year-old who were also in the car sustained life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized.
In addition, a 78-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife tragically died in Aiken County, South Carolina, when a tree fell onto their home, as confirmed by Coroner Darryl Ables. Meanwhile, in Georgia, a 27-year-old mother and her two-month-old twins, whose names have not been disclosed, were killed when a tree collapsed onto their mobile home while they slept, according to McDuffie County Coroner Paul Johnson.
Reports also indicate that a 7-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, yet to be identified, died when a tree fell on their burning house, as stated by local news outlets.
The death toll from Hurricane Helene has risen to over 40, as reported by The New York Times and The Weather Channel. The storm made landfall near Perry, Florida, at approximately 11:10 p.m. local time before being downgraded to a tropical storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. Before its arrival, the National Hurricane Center had issued warnings about the potential for life-threatening storm surges, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall across Florida and parts of the southeastern United States.
