The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has identified Charles Patrick La Fortune, a 78-year-old resident of Sebastopol, who died in a serious multi-vehicle collision on state Highway 12 in Santa Rosa on Thursday, August 29. La Fortune was driving his Toyota Tacoma pickup truck when it was struck by a dump truck that had caught fire.
Emergency responders, including the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Rosa Fire Department, were dispatched to the accident scene at 11:52 a.m. The crash occurred on westbound Highway 12 at the intersection with Fulton Road, where the dump truck rear-ended vehicles that were stopped at the light.
According to CHP Officer David deRutte, La Fortune was alone in his vehicle, which was the first one impacted by the dump truck. The collision caused the Toyota to become engulfed in flames and pushed it into several other cars, resulting in significant damage. Eight individuals from various vehicles were transported to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The cause of the dump truck’s failure to stop in time is currently under investigation by the CHP. In the aftermath, firefighters worked on the scene for several hours to assist with documentation and other duties. The identification of La Fortune took longer than usual due to the severity of his injuries, as stated by Sheriff’s Spokesperson Rob Dillion.
