On Monday, authorities in Port St. Lucie identified Paul Simon Fialho, 50, as the man fatally shot by a police officer during a tense standoff over the weekend. According to law enforcement, Fialho had zip-tied a woman, barricaded himself inside a residence with three children, and armed himself with a propane tank and lighter.
Police responded to a 911 call made by the grandmother of the children, who were 6-year-old triplets. The children were reportedly terrified and shouting from the second floor of the house that “Daddy was hitting mommy” and that “mommy could not move.”
When officers arrived, they found the doors barricaded, with a minivan blocking the front entrance. They heard the children yelling inside, “Daddy was killing mommy.” Joined by a sergeant, the officers climbed over the van to enter the home, eventually locating Fialho and the woman in the garage.
The woman was found bound with zip ties, and Fialho had armed himself with a propane tank and lighter. Officers ordered him to drop the items, but he refused. Fearing that Fialho intended to set the house on fire, one of the officers fired multiple shots, killing him.
The woman suffered minor injuries, while the children and officers involved were unharmed. The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation, now handled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, continues.
