Authorities have identified Jonathan McEvoy, a 51-year-old man from La Porte, as the driver involved in a tragic incident that caused a massive pipeline fire in Deer Park. The crash occurred on September 16, when McEvoy’s Lexus NX350 crashed through a fence and collided with a pipeline valve, igniting a fire that burned for approximately 80 hours.
Deer Park police reported that McEvoy’s body was recovered once the fire was extinguished, allowing investigators to begin looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Witnesses observed the SUV speeding before it broke through the fence of a nearby Walmart and struck the above-ground valve.
The fire erupted around 10 a.m. at Spencer Highway near East Boulevard, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents. Many were allowed to return by Wednesday, though some faced significant damage to their homes and vehicles. One family even reported a missing cat in the aftermath of the incident.
A transportation company’s work vehicle captured the crash and explosion on video from across the street, providing further evidence of the accident’s severity. As of now, authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
