Four individuals who lost their lives in a plane crash in the Vermont woods have been identified as residents of Connecticut. The tragic incident involved a Piper aircraft that took off from Windham Airport around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, destined for Basin Harbor Airport in Ferrisburgh.
The victims are Delilah Van Ness, 15, and her mother, 51-year-old Susan Van Ness, both from Middletown; 55-year-old Paul Pelletier from Columbia; and 88-year-old Frank Rodriquez from Lebanon. The group had flown to Vermont for a brunch reservation and was expected to return to Connecticut shortly after noon.
A witness observed the plane on the runway around 12:15 p.m., but when it did not return as anticipated, family members alerted local authorities. Vermont State Police noted that there were no prior reports of distress or crash indications related to the aircraft.
Using cellphone data, the Federal Aviation Administration identified the plane’s last known location near the airstrip. Around 10:20 p.m. Sunday, Middletown police informed Vermont State Police, leading to a large-scale search effort. With the help of a drone from Middlebury police, investigators discovered the wreckage around 12:20 a.m. on Monday in a wooded area east of Basin Harbor Airport.
