Fatal Des Moines, Iowa shooting death of Weston Derby – Obituary
The Des Moines Police Department has named two officers involved in a shooting that led to the death of 45-year-old Weston Derby of Bellevue, Nebraska, and left one officer seriously injured.
On July 30th, Senior Police Officer Jesse Schneider and Officer Anthony Lampman responded to a call regarding a restraining order violation in the 5800 block of SE 35th Circle around 3:30 a.m. After locating the suspect’s vehicle, a brief pursuit ensued. The chase ended in the 4300 block of E. Army Post Road when Derby abandoned the vehicle and fled into dense vegetation.
According to Sgt. Paul Parizek, Derby initially pointed a gun at himself before aiming it at the officers, prompting both Schneider and Lampman to open fire. Derby was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.
Officer Schneider sustained injuries during the incident, initially believed to be from Derby’s gun, but it was later revealed that he had been accidentally hit by Officer Lampman’s bullet. Schneider, who was once in critical condition, has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Both officers are on paid administrative leave as per protocol following such incidents, while
