Paul Simon Fialho, 50, was fatally shot by police during a domestic violence incident in Port St. Lucie, Florida, on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred at a home located on NW Marion Avenue and NW Bayshore Boulevard when police responded to reports of a violent situation involving a woman and three children.
Upon arrival, officers found the entrances to the house barricaded, with a minivan obstructing the front door. Hearing cries for help, they managed to enter through the garage after removing several obstacles. Inside, they discovered a woman restrained with zip ties around her arms and neck.
Fialho initially complied with an order to free the woman but then reportedly armed himself with a lighter and a running propane tank. Police Assistant Chief Leo Niemczyk stated that the police sergeant on the scene had “no choice but to disable the threat,” leading to Fialho being shot and killed.
Following the shooting, officers evacuated the woman and the three children, ensuring their safety. Investigators later found multiple gas cans in the house and expressed concerns that flammable liquids were poured throughout the residence, indicating Fialho’s intention to ignite the home.
Assistant Chief Niemczyk noted that this was not the first time police had been called to the residence, as there had been previous domestic battery incidents involving Fialho. The sergeant and two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the investigation as per standard protocol.
