As Louisiana State Police continue their investigation into the tragic vehicle accident that claimed the life of Shreveport Police Officer Matthew Rhoden on Friday, condolences have poured in from the community and those who knew him. The 37-year-old officer had a distinguished background, serving as a force protection officer in Kuwait, and previously held positions at Ft. Hood in Texas and Ft. Riley in Kansas as a combat engineer. He earned a degree in criminal justice, homeland security, and emergency management from Strayer University in 2021.
The accident occurred around 2 p.m. on West 70th Street, just west of the Broadacres intersection.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux expressed profound gratitude for Rhoden’s service, stating, “While words can hardly ease the pain felt by his family, friends, and colleagues, our entire community stands with them during this difficult time.” He described Officer Rhoden as embodying courage, honor, and selflessness.
Local resident Johnah Tucker shared her memories of Rhoden, recalling that he had responded to her calls for assistance multiple times in the Mooretown area. “He was very compassionate and helped keep my daughter from running away,” she said. “He will be missed.”
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson also extended his condolences, stating that he and his wife were saddened by Rhoden’s passing while serving the community.
The Shreveport Police Department has not yet identified the passenger in Rhoden’s vehicle, described as his friend and fellow officer, who was taken to Ochsner LSU Health hospital. SPD spokesman Chris Bordelon mentioned that more information would be forthcoming in the next day or two regarding the officer who had been with the department since 2021.
