Lamont A. Campbell, 51, has been charged with murder and kidnapping following an alleged hijacking of an LA Metro bus that resulted in the death of a passenger, Anthony Rivera, who was fatally shot. Prosecutors filed multiple charges on Monday, September 30, 2024, including robbery and carjacking, as well as special allegations for using a firearm during the incident.
According to reports, the hijacking took place last week, during which at least one passenger was robbed. Campbell, who has a criminal history that includes previous narcotics convictions, led police on a lengthy pursuit through downtown Los Angeles after the bus was taken over. LAPD SWAT officers eventually stormed the bus to rescue the driver and attempted to save Rivera, who sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
Rivera, 48, was commuting home from his job at Dodger Stadium when the incident occurred. His mother, Teresa Rivera, expressed her desire for justice and called for improvements in safety on public transit. Campbell’s criminal history includes multiple drug-related arrests and convictions, and if convicted of the current charges, he faces a potential sentence of up to 90 years to life in prison.
Authorities are still investigating the motives behind Campbell’s actions, and several other passengers on the bus have been identified as victims of various crimes during the hijacking.
