Two individuals from Barrie have been charged with first-degree murder following a tragic shooting incident in a park located in Keswick on Wednesday.
According to York Regional Police (YRP), officers were dispatched to the vicinity of Bayview Avenue and Lowndes Avenue after reports of gunfire shortly before 7:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered two adult males, both suffering from gunshot wounds, in Bayview Park. Tragically, the victims were later identified as Reilly MacDonald, 21, from Keswick, and Mark Sutcliffe, 39, from Stouffville, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that evening, law enforcement apprehended two suspects in connection to the shooting. John McKay, 19, and Ethan Pashka-McNeil, 21, both from Barrie, face charges of first-degree murder. Court records indicate that neither of the accused has prior criminal convictions.
Sutcliffe has been remembered by friends as a protective figure who regarded many in his circle as family. MacDonald, who was known online as Stackzz Mac, had posted images on social media showcasing weapons and displaying gang-related signs, and those close to him noted his struggles with mental health.
Investigators have yet to clarify the nature of the relationships among the individuals involved but believe that they were acquainted. Authorities have stated that there are no additional suspects being sought and that this incident was not random, posing no further threat to public safety.
On Thursday evening, officers were observed at Barrett Crescent in Barrie as part of the ongoing homicide investigation. The following day, Barrie and York Regional Police were seen conducting a search on Browning Trail, utilizing K9 units and metal detectors.
The two suspects are currently in custody and are set to appear in a Newmarket court in early October. The charges against them remain unproven in court.
