A tragic accident in Lapeer, Michigan, resulted in the deaths of two men when their truck was struck by an Amtrak train last Friday night. The incident occurred at approximately 10:26 p.m. at the railroad crossing on South Main Street (M-24) near Cramton Park. According to police reports, 61-year-old Richard Griggs, who was driving a 2003 Chevy S-10, failed to stop at the crossing while an Amtrak train approached.
As a result, the train collided with the pickup truck. Both Griggs and his passenger, 39-year-old Marcus Griggs, were transported to McLaren Lapeer Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Investigators determined that the train’s crossing signals were operational and that the gates were down at the time of the accident. Additionally, the Amtrak train was sounding its horn as it approached the crossing.
