A devastating scene unfolded in North Carolina as Jessica Drye Turner, who was in Texas at the time, desperately sought help for her family trapped on the roof of their Asheville home amid rising floodwaters from Hurricane Helene. In a Facebook post, she shared a heart-wrenching photo taken by her sister, Megan Drye, depicting their parents in their 70s and her 7-year-old nephew Micah, surrounded by the furious floodwaters.
Despite their urgent calls for rescue, assistance did not arrive in time. Tragically, the roof on which her loved ones were stranded collapsed, leading to the drowning of her parents and Micah.
The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has resulted in at least 133 confirmed deaths, with 40 fatalities reported in Buncombe County, where Asheville is located. Jessica, who was hundreds of miles away, posted a photo showing her family huddled together on the roof, anxiously waiting for help as vehicles floated past them.
In her social media updates, Jessica expressed her profound sorrow and heartache, emphasizing that faith was all they had during such a dire situation. She later revealed that her nephew Micah’s body was discovered a quarter-mile from where his mother was rescued after she became trapped in debris.
Jessica’s other sister, Heather, and she rushed to Asheville overnight to support Megan, despite travel warnings due to the storm. Jessica shared her grief, urging for prayers for Megan, who lost her son, and for the family as they navigated this unimaginable tragedy together.
Megan was rescued about an hour after the roof collapsed, and Jessica reflected on the loss, describing Micah as a “perfect little boy” who wanted to be a superhero. A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Megan in the wake of this tragedy.
As rescue efforts continue across North Carolina and surrounding states, officials fear that the death toll from Hurricane Helene may rise as more isolated communities are reached and communication is restored.
