Sonny Clark dies in a tragic Rudyard Lake canoe accident
Fatal Rudyard Lake canoeing incident claims life of 17-year-old Sonny Clark – Obituary.
Sonny Clark, a 17-year-old from Leek, tragically drowned after a canoeing accident during a wild camping trip at Rudyard Lake. Despite warnings from his parents not to take the canoe out, Sonny, who was passionate about the outdoors, ventured onto the lake with two friends late at night on February 24. The boys were not wearing lifejackets, and the canoe capsized when Sonny stood up, causing the boat to take on water.
While his two friends managed to swim to safety in the near-freezing conditions, Sonny was not seen again until the next day, when his body was recovered. He was pronounced dead after being transported to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. The inquest revealed that Sonny, an experienced canoeist, died from drowning following the accident. His love for nature and canoeing was well known, and he had been canoeing since childhood with his father.
Coroner Philip Vollans concluded that Sonny’s death was an accidental drowning during the camping trip.
