Fatal Aiken County house fire death of Joyce Barfield – Obituary.
A 78-year-old woman, Joyce Barfield, was discovered deceased following a house fire early Sunday morning, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office. Barfield, a resident of Gloverville, was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by Coroner Darryl Ables in a news release.
At approximately 5:30 a.m., authorities responded to the home on School Street, where a fire had broken out, resulting in Barfield’s death. Firefighters found her in the residence while battling the active fire, and she was declared dead at 5:59 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled in Newberry to determine the exact cause of death.
No other individuals were injured in the incident. The fire is believed to have started in a bedroom, possibly from a candle, according to the coroner’s office.
There was no confirmation whether the home had experienced a power outage due to Hurricane Helene, though over 77,000 outages were reported in Aiken County as of Sunday afternoon. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, along with the coroner’s office, is investigating the circumstances surrounding Barfield’s death.
