In the early hours of Monday, a devastating collision between a police patrol car and a civilian vehicle in Warren, Michigan, resulted in the deaths of two men and left two officers critically injured. The accident occurred around 5 a.m. near the intersection of Schoenherr Road and Prospect Avenue. Authorities have identified the deceased as 34-year-old Cedric Hayden and 33-year-old DeJuan Pettis, who had just finished their work shifts at Chrysler.
According to the Warren Police Department, two officers in a marked patrol car were heading south on Schoenherr when they collided with a white Dodge Durango, driven by Pettis, which was making a westbound turn onto Prospect. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, and no statement has been made regarding fault.
Both Hayden and Pettis were pronounced dead at the scene. Hayden’s cousin expressed the deep sorrow of the family, mentioning that Hayden was on his way home to his two young daughters at the time of the tragic incident.
The two officers involved in the crash were also severely injured. One officer, who was in the passenger seat, sustained multiple fractures and head injuries and underwent extensive surgery. Both officers are currently in stable but critical condition.
In response to circulating rumors, the Warren Police Department has confirmed that the officers were not pursuing the Dodge Durango or any other vehicle when the crash took place. Additionally, investigators are confident that neither Hayden nor Pettis were involved in any criminal activity, including a nearby break-in that occurred hours later. The vehicle, registered to Pettis, was legally owned and not under suspicion of being stolen.
