On Saturday morning, September 30, 2024, a devastating car accident occurred on Highway 99 in Sutter County, California, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The Sutter County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as 20-year-old Shane Loudermilk from Gridley, and Yuba City residents 48-year-old Ricardo Jojo Soto Castro and 43-year-old Juan Diego Soto Castro.
The incident took place around 11:40 a.m. when Loudermilk was driving a 2015 Dodge Challenger southbound on Highway 99. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), he crossed into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2010 Nissan Sentra driven by Ricardo Jojo, with Juan Diego seated in the passenger position. Tragically, both occupants of the Nissan, along with Loudermilk, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Dodge contained several other passengers, including a 21-year-old woman, two 18-year-old men, and a 16-year-old boy. One passenger declined medical assistance, while the others were taken to Adventist Health + Rideout Hospital for treatment of injuries. One individual required transfer to UC Davis Medical Center for specialized care.
In the aftermath of the crash, authorities suspect that drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the incident. Highway 99 northbound at State Route 113 was closed for approximately three hours for the investigation and cleanup. A GoFundMe has been established to assist the families of the deceased Soto Castro men, both of whom left behind wives and children.
