A 24-year-old man, James V. Afuvai, was shot and killed by an Anchorage police officer during an incident in Mountain View on Sunday night. According to police reports, Afuvai approached the officer while armed with a 12-inch knife, disregarding commands to drop the weapon.
The Anchorage Police Department stated that Afuvai was shot in the upper body after charging at the officer. Authorities have confirmed that Afuvai made multiple calls to 911 prior to the shooting, during which he reported being injured.
Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case provided details during a midnight press conference, explaining that the officer was responding to a call for help in the 500 block of North Park Street. However, he was waiting in his patrol car for backup when Afuvai confronted him with the knife.
According to police spokesperson Renee Oistad, officers were not aware that the individual making the emergency calls was the same person who ultimately charged at the officer. Oistad noted that the situation indicated a possible mental health crisis, prompting the decision to involve the Mobile Intervention Team.
Chief Case emphasized the risks officers face in such volatile situations and stressed the importance of following police commands to prevent tragedies. He also mentioned that the shooting was recorded on body-worn cameras and patrol car dash cameras.
This incident marks the fifth fatal shooting involving Anchorage police this year and the eighth officer-involved shooting overall in the city.
