Caitlyn Heron, a 23-year-old woman, tragically lost her life in a car accident early Wednesday morning when her vehicle crashed into a canal in Cooper City. Her mother, Blanche Pastore, expressed her grief, stating that Caitlyn had many aspirations for the future, including plans for the upcoming year and financial independence.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 6 a.m. about a car that had gone into a canal off Griffin Road. Upon arrival, authorities discovered that the vehicle had broken through a barrier on a bridge and ended up submerged in the water.
A passenger in the car, who managed to escape, was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover. However, Heron could not be saved. Pastore arrived at the scene after receiving news from her daughter’s boyfriend, who was in the vehicle. Family members identified Caitlyn by matching her tattoos.
Sheriff’s dive teams located both the car and Heron but were unable to rescue her due to the murky water and challenging conditions. The sheriff’s office closed off the westbound lanes of Griffin Road for several hours while the car was retrieved, with Heron’s family watching in distress from the bank of the canal.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and authorities are urging any witnesses or anyone with relevant footage to come forward.
