A pedestrian tragically lost his life while attempting to cross a highway in Laurinburg on Wednesday morning. According to local police, the incident occurred around 6 a.m. on Highway 74 near Highway 401. Authorities discovered the pedestrian, identified as 44-year-old Damon Giles from Laurinburg, lying on the ground, where emergency medical services pronounced him dead. Investigations revealed that a 2017 Nissan Murano traveling west on Highway 74 struck Giles as he crossed the westbound lanes. It was noted that Giles was wearing dark clothing, and the area was unlit at the time of the incident. The driver of the vehicle sustained no injuries. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is assisting the Laurinburg Police Department with the ongoing investigation.
