The Anchorage Police Department has confirmed the identity of the man shot and killed by an officer on Sunday as 24-year-old James Afuvai. The incident took place in the Mountain View neighborhood after police received a call from Afuvai reporting an emergency and an injured person.
Upon arriving, officers suspected they were responding to a mental health crisis and called in a team that pairs officers with mental health professionals. However, upon their arrival, they found no signs of injuries.
While an officer was preparing to wait for backup, Afuvai approached him carrying a 12-inch knife. As the officer exited his vehicle and began to back away, Afuvai allegedly charged at him, prompting the officer to fire at least one shot, striking him in the upper body.
Afuvai was later pronounced dead at the hospital. This incident marks the eighth police shooting in Anchorage this year, with five resulting in fatalities and three injuries.
As the investigation is ongoing, police have not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. However, Chief Sean Case stated that more information would be shared in the coming days.
