Fatal Dover shooting death of Barry Best – Obituary
The Dover Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the homicide of 50-year-old Barry Best from Dover. Authorities have identified 21-year-old Alexander Singletary of Smyrna as the suspect in the shooting that took place on September 30, 2024.
Following a thorough investigation, detectives executed a search warrant on October 2 at a residence on New Castle Avenue in Dover, where Singletary was apprehended without incident. During this operation, another individual, 18-year-old Jaylan Koroma of Dover, was also taken into custody for unrelated charges. The search revealed two handguns at the location.
Both suspects were processed at the Dover Police Department and subsequently arraigned. Singletary is being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on a cash bail of $1,060,000 with charges including first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and three counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. Koroma was committed to the same facility on a secured bail of $2,000 for non-compliance with bond conditions.
Both individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The initial incident occurred around 3:46 p.m. on September 30, when police responded to reports of gunfire in the unit block of South Governors Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found Best suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to Christiana Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
