Michael Gabaldon dies in fatal Valencia County deputy-involved shooting
Fatal Valencia County deputy shooting death of Michael Gabaldon – Obituary
Michael Gabaldon, 51, was shot and killed by a Valencia County sheriff’s deputy on Sunday evening following escalating conflicts with a neighbor, Thomas Rodriguez. Law enforcement had responded to previous incidents involving Rodriguez firing a rifle into the air and attempting to run over Gabaldon. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation and secure a protection order, deputies returned a third time in response to gunfire.
According to authorities, during this latest visit, Gabaldon was armed and involved in an exchange of gunfire with Rodriguez. A Valencia County deputy discharged their firearm, striking Gabaldon, who later died from his injuries. The New Mexico State Police are currently investigating the incident, and the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave as per department protocol.
Sheriff Denise Vigil assured the public that her office is fully cooperating with the state police investigation, and additional details, including body camera footage, will be released once the investigation is complete.
