The family of Janine Chetty, a 35-year-old woman from Johannesburg, is mourning her tragic death after her body was discovered at Illovo Beach in Durban. Chetty was reported missing before being found by local community members on September 21, 2024.
Chetty was visiting Durban from Gauteng when she reportedly drowned. Dawn Gounden from Renegades Search and Rescue stated that efforts to identify her began when community members found her body, initially believing she was a local resident.
After her family filed a missing person report, they reached out to the Vulnerable Citizens Support Initiative (VCSI), which helped circulate her photograph widely in hopes of locating her. Gounden’s team was subsequently called to assist and successfully linked Chetty’s identity to the body discovered on the beach.
In a statement, Gounden conveyed the family’s profound grief, describing Chetty as a beautiful soul whose kindness touched many lives. They expressed their gratitude to those involved in the search that provided closure during this painful time.
The KwaZulu-Natal police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, with Amanzimtoti police opening an inquest docket following the discovery of Chetty’s body on the beach.
