The Mosinee community came together on Wednesday evening for a candlelight vigil in memory of 11-year-old Ireland Ehrfurth, who tragically lost her life last week when she was struck by a truck while riding her bicycle.
Since the accident, there has been an outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, and others who knew her. Her mother, in the obituary, shared heartfelt words: “Ireland wanted to be everyone’s friend. She would leave no one behind. You will be so deeply missed by us all.”
Community members recalled the young girl’s bright personality, with her red hair and blue eyes, often bringing joy and laughter to those around her. The vigil took place at her favorite park, a place she visited regularly near her home.
Among those who spoke at the event was her godfather, Darren Gauger, who reflected on how deeply Ireland touched the lives of many, from children to adults, including local police and veterans. The support from the community has also extended to her family, with Beste Funeral Home covering the funeral expenses.
Nick Ficken, the director of the funeral home, emphasized the importance of allowing the family time to grieve without worrying about financial burdens, saying, “Grieve with your family, heal with your family, and don’t worry about the money side of things.”
Ficken, who is also a father, felt a personal connection to Ireland’s story, as he saw similarities between her interests and those of his own children. He described her as an innocent soul whose loss is a profound tragedy.
Though Ireland’s mother, Kate, was not ready to speak publicly, she expressed her deep love for her daughter through the obituary: “You brought so much joy, happiness, and laughter to everyone you met. Always smiling with those bright blue eyes.”
A memorial service for Ireland will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at Beste Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. A special account has been set up at Marathon Bank for donations to support the family.
