Authorities have identified the suspect who was killed during a deputy-involved shooting in National City last Friday. The incident occurred around 1:22 p.m. when uniformed San Diego Sheriff’s deputies stopped a white Acura with three occupants in the 200 block of Mile of Cars Way. After the front passenger fled on foot, deputies requested assistance from the National City Police Department.
The driver of the Acura was identified as 29-year-old Dominic Dimaio, and the female occupant was 36-year-old Whitney Cowan. Both were arrested and booked into county jail on narcotics-related charges and for being felons in possession of body armor.
During the search for the fleeing suspect, a witness informed a detective that the man had run through a nearby Dodge dealership and entered a parked tow truck. The detective, identified as Douglas Akers, who has served with the San Diego Sheriff’s Office for about 35 years, gave commands to the suspect. However, the man fired at least one round in Akers’ direction, shattering the passenger window of the tow truck. Akers sustained injuries from the glass shards.
In response, Akers returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene. The deceased has been identified as 46-year-old Gene Stewart from Lakeside. The San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit is currently investigating the incident in accordance with the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding. The findings will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to assess whether Akers faces any criminal liability for his actions. The investigation will also be monitored by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
