Fatal Escondido police shooting death of Antonio Rosales – Obituary.

Authorities have confirmed the identity of the man involved in a police shooting in Escondido on Wednesday evening. The suspect, 34-year-old Antonio Rosales, was named by the San Diego Police Department on Thursday. He is currently hospitalized in North County due to gunshot wounds sustained during the incident.

The situation began around 7:38 p.m. when Escondido police received reports of a man brandishing a gun at the transit center located at 700 W. Valley Parkway. When officers arrived, Rosales fled on foot, prompting a pursuit. Police say he was commanded to stop and drop the items he was holding. After running approximately 100 feet down a bike path, Rosales reportedly turned toward an officer with what appeared to be a gun, which led the officer to discharge his weapon multiple times.

Rosales suffered multiple gunshot wounds but is expected to survive. Officers provided aid at the scene before paramedics transported him to the hospital. A revolver-style BB gun was later discovered near where Rosales fell. He has been arrested on charges of brandishing a weapon in the presence of an officer and resisting arrest.

The officer involved has been with the Escondido Police Department for about three years and was wearing a body camera during the encounter. The investigation into the shooting will be handled by SDPD detectives, and the District Attorney’s office will assess whether the officer will face any criminal liability for the shooting. The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are also monitoring the investigation.
