Marilyn Jean Drebenstedt dies in fatal Middleton car crash

On Tuesday afternoon, an 87-year-old woman named Marilyn Jean Drebenstedt from Mediapolis lost her life in a tragic car accident on Highway 34 in Middleton. According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. while Drebenstedt was driving a 2012 Kia Sorento westbound on the highway.
Witnesses reported that Drebenstedt stopped her vehicle and began reversing on the highway. She then attempted to turn left at a crossover marked with a “NO U TURN” sign near mile marker 255. During this maneuver, her car was struck on the driver’s side by a semi-truck driven by 55-year-old Richard Scott Hoops of Sanborn, who was also traveling westbound.
Despite wearing her seat belt, Drebenstedt was pronounced dead at the scene. The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office and the Danville Fire Department assisted in the response to the accident, which remains under investigation.
